5,280 FEET: HIGH ALTITUDE
Denver is exactly one mile high, and the altitude can have a powerful effect on folks who aren't used to thinner air. Here are some tips for making your stay in Denver and the Rocky Mountain region more enjoyable!
- Drink lots of water. Drinking plenty of water is the number one way to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Because of the dry climate in Colorado, you need about twice as much water here as you would at home.
- Moderate alcohol consumption. At altitude, alcohol will have a significantly stronger effect on your system that you might expect. Reminder that the ceremony is at 9,000' and celebration at 8,000'!
- Ease up on exercise. And, yes, the effects of exercise are more intense here as well. That's why so many international athletes choose to train here. If you normally run 10 miles a day at home, you might try running just 6 miles in Denver.
- Wear sunscreen. Denver receives over 300 days of sunshine each year! And there is 25% less protection from the sun's rays at Denver's elevation, so don't forget to put on sunscreen.
Getting to Colorado
I'm come-ing on a jetplane...
...don't know when I'll be back again!
Denver International Airport (DIA) has dozens of nonstop flights each day from San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and most East Coast airports. Direct flights from these locations are 2 to 3 hours.
We’ve found that Southwest Airlines typically has the lowest fares. Southwest tickets for early September 2016 will go on sale in mid-March.
I'll be coooming on the raaaaaailroad...
... aaaaall the live-long day!
For any of you fancying a most romantic trip across America's great west, a 32 hour journey on Amtrak's California Zephyr might be just the thing! As of mid February, fares from Emeryville, California (departing at 9:10 am daily) to Denver, Colorado (6:38pm) were $278 for 2 coach seats, or $574 for a Superliner Roomette with 2 bunks, meals included. And did we mention that Denver's Union Station recently underwent a gorgeous remodel?!
